The Recreation Therapist plans, organizes, and supervises recreational activities to promote healthy leisure, socialization, and skill development for youth in a human services setting.
Develops diverse programs including arts, sports, and community outings aligned with treatment plans. Supervises recreation facilities ensuring safety, performs maintenance, and manages risk. Documents progress, participates in treatment team meetings, and provides feedback on service plans. Supervises activities for up to three youth and assists in event planning. Requires a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field and at least one year of youth recreation experience; OMH-funded roles need a CTRS credential. Must have CPR certification, valid NYS driver’s license, and may require Lifeguard certification. Skills include youth engagement, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques, with a focus on ethical conduct.
